Dr. Ashley, a cardiologist and geneticist, takes the reader through some basic genetics initially. Very basic. You don't have to have a science background to understand what he's saying. But you do have to take that part of the book in small chunks and ruminate on them. With that primer information under your belt, Dr.Ashley gets into individual cases wherein he was a physician and or genetics consultant and researcher. Very unusual cases of diseases you've never heard of for the most part. And discussions of the travails of those patients who suffer with their initially undiagnosed medical maladies. Then into the degrees of success, or lack thereof of these patients. He brings these patients into the reader's life. These are real people with real lives. You become sympathetic to them. Their struggles medically and socially become germane to you, the reader. You root for them.It's amazing what genetics is doing for some disease analysis and treatment. And with CRISPR gene editing, more avenues are open to treat patients with diseases that have a genetic component, even a point mutation or a combination of dysfunctioning genes. Cutting edge stuff. No telling where this science and medicine will be in the forthcoming decades. This book will get you up to speed, for now.
